WESTERLY - RHODE ISLAND Coastal Westerly, tucked into Rhode Island's southwest corner on the Connecticut border, has been a favorite seaside vacation spot for more than 100 years. From the fine Victorian elegance of Watch Hill to Misquamicut's easy-going ambience and honky-tonk, Westerly offers a wide variety of accommodations and attractions. Beautiful beaches embody the quintessential New England beach vacation. Miles of coastal inlets make Westerly the hub for South County's fast-growing saltwater fly fishing market, and deep sea fishing excursions are available as well. You can also ply the greens and the fairways of two prominent golf courses that provide leisurely play along the coastal ponds. Historic Wilcox Park, a favorite among visitors and residents, features 18 acres of specimen trees, shrubs, display flower beds, a large koi pond, dwarf conifer collection, fountain, monuments, daylily collection and perennial borders. The park is also this site for a traditional First Night, New Year's Eve celebration that provides fun and entertainment for all ages. Watch Hill is a charming Victorian village located at the mouth of Little Narragansett Bay. It has been a long time favorite hideaway for famous visitors such as Groucho Marx, Isadora Duncan, David Niven, Clark Gable and Douglas Fairbanks, all drawn to the beauty and privacy of this seaside retreat. From May through September, Watch Hill days are filled with leisurely picnicking, sailing, golf and beach-going at windswept Watch Hill Beach and Napatree Point. The historic Flying Horse Carousel circles round and round all summer long to the laughter and squeals of happy children. Couples stroll along the main street, stopping to browse in quaint shops or share an ice cream soda at an old fashioned soda fountain. Misquamicut Beach spanning seven miles from Watch Hill to Weekapaug is Rhode Island's longest stretch of beach. With pristine waters and white sand Misquamicut Beach features an array of activities for the entire family, including a state of the art Pavilion with plenty of parking. Activities include amusement parks with a carousel, mini-golf, go-carts, batting cages, kiddy rides and more. Water Slides, paddle boats and Jet Ski's keep you moving in the summer sun. Misquamicut Beach is the place to ride the waves. Government: Established: 1669 Town Hall |
